The Portuguese superstar finalized a settlement with the Spanish authorities and has thus avoided jail time.

Cristiano Ronaldo has finally closed the book on his tax evasion case after agreeing to pay a fine. The Portuguese ace will cough up $21.6M but has avoided time behind bars.

The Juventus star was in Spain on Tuesday to wrap up the affair and signed a previously agreed settlement. The five-time Ballon d'Or winner was handed a 23-month suspended sentence but will not spend a day in prison due to Spanish laws.

First-time offenders handed sentences less than two years can serve their time under probation. This will be the case for the Portuguese icon, who follows in the footsteps of other football stars who reached settlements after being accused of tax fraud.

The 33-year-old allegedly used shell companies outside Spain to hide income made from image rights between 2011 and 2014. Ronaldo, who fells persecuted by the Spanish authorites, eventually left the country and Real Madrid but was forced to return for a 15-minute cameo in court.

His legal battle played a part in the attacker's decision to end his nine-year spell at Los Blancos in favor of a move to Juventus. Cristiano will now return to Italy having shrugged off one issue, but the matter of the rape allegations still stands.

A civil lawsuit filed by Kathryn Mayorga accuses the former Man United winger of rape. The Euro 2016 winner has denied the allegations despite Las Vegas police reopening the case.
