Germany have arguably one of the strongest squads at this summer's tournament - so much so that Joachim Low opted to leave out rising star Leroy Sane as well as Mario Gotze, the man who won them the competition in 2014. That being said, die Mannschaft will certainly be well aware of past history and an uncomfortable trend that has plagued recent tournament winners.
With the exception of 2002 champs Brazil, three out of the last four winners - France, Italy, and Spain - have all exited the competition at the group stage after winning it. While many are not expecting the same fate to befall Germany, who are by far the heavy favorites in a group containing Mexico, South Korea, and Sweden, it definitely will be something on their minds as they prepare to commence their campaign.
Low's side haven't impressed in their recent friendlies - with just one win out of their last five games - but given that they also won the 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia last year featuring a largely second-string and younger squad, they naturally are expected to be one of the heavyweights at this World Cup. Star shot-stopper Manuel Neuer has finally returned to action after a long injury lay-off, while Mesut Ozil, who missed out on their last game against Saudi Arabia, will be back in the starting XI.
As for Mexico, they have never gotten beyond the round of 16 at a World Cup, with the proverbial "fifth game curse" coming back to haunt El Tri time and time again. Although Germany are expected to top this group, they'll naturally want to put themselves in a good position to finish as runners-up, although they could face stiff competition from both South Korea and Sweden. Chicharito Hernandez will be again the star man for his national side, despite his frustrating run at West Ham, while Guillermo Ochoa will hope to repeat his strong performances that saw him become a household name during the 2014 World Cup.
El Tri have never beaten Germany in three prior attempts at World Cups, but they'll be hoping to end that bad run on Sunday.
