Real Madrid’s hopes of reversing Cristiano Ronaldo’s five-match ban have been dashed. According to Sport, the Champions League holders have lost their appeal, as the Appeals Committee upheld the initial suspension handed to the 32-year-old.
The Portuguese superstar was handed this ban for his actions in the 3-1 win over Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup. The Blancos ace was sent off after receiving a second yellow for what the referee felt was diving. The attacker was shocked by his dismissal and thus pushed the referee out of frustration.

RFEF rules state that pushing a match official warrants a ban anywhere from four to twelve games. Ronaldo was given the minimum punishment, with the attacking missing an additional game due to the red card. He was also slapped with a €3005 fine.
Real Madrid were hoping that if Cristiano’s second yellow card was overturned, his ban would be decreased by one game. The committee’s decision went against the league champions, meaning Ronaldo will miss the 2nd-leg Super Cup tie and the first four Spanish Primera Division games – vs Deportivo, Valencia, Levante and Real Sociedad.
And according to Marca, another Real Madrid man could be in trouble as a result of Cristiano’s ban. The Spanish tabloid claim Zinedine Zidane is facing a fine after publicly criticizing his player’s “harsh” punishment.
"His words are being studied and there will possibly be a complaint filed and fine handed out," Marca quote Spanish FA sources as saying.
