Looking to confirm World Cup progress

Germany will start off as amongst the favourites to win Euro2008. Two years ago at the World Cup, on home soil, Germany lost at the semi-final stage to eventual winners Italy. Admittedly, having vociferous home support behind them certainly helped, so critics are still wondering whether Germany can reproduce that sparkling form on foreign turf. Coach Joachim Low inherited a winning side form Jurgen Klinsmann, and he has continued the former coach’s work. The results have been positive, as Germany were very impressive in finishing second in their qualifying group.   Yet, Low does have some vexing issues to contend with. Michael Ballack, Germany’s undisputed star player for the better part of this decade, has barely played for Chelsea this season due to injury. Bayern Munich striker Lukas Podolski has been going through a terrible run of form, which means the onus will be on Miroslav Klose to score goals. Germany should be able to compensate for these setbacks. Indeed, Low’s biggest strength is his ability to calmly go about his work. The serene coach should be given immense credit for coping with a spate of injuries during the qualifying campaign. Players like Ballack, Tim Borowski, and Podolski were all on the casualty list at one or time or another, but Low coped admirably. Germany are in Group B, alongside Croatia, Poland, and Austria. A manageable group will give the Germans the chance to conserve their energy for the business end of the tournament. A team famous for its stamina and athleticism may be one of the fresher sides in the latter stages of the tournament—a frightening prospect.

How Germany qualified

Germany scored a total of thirty-five goals during the qualifiers. They beat the Czech Republic 2-1 and Slovakia 4-1. Germany’s second place finish does not tell of their obvious superiority to the Czech Republic—they only lost to the Czechs in a tie that was meaningless to their qualification.

How Germany play

Germany play a 4-4-2 formation with Phillip Lahm, Per Mertesacker, Christoph Metzelder, and 22-year-old Marcel Jansen in defence. Bernd Schneider, Torsten Frings, Ballack, and Bastian Schweinsteiger make up the midfield. Ballack is normally the heartbeat of the German midfield. Frings operates in front of the defence. Podolski and Klose form the strike partnership. Germany’s game is premised on speed and tough tackling.

About the coach

Low is an urbane coach, who has not allowed his team to miss a beat after Klinsmann’s departure. He was the number two to Klinsmann during 2006 World Cup.

Key players

Torsten Frings - A leader in midfield, Frings can also venture forward from his defensive positions. Many will remember him for punching Argentine Julio Cruz in a post-match scuffle during the quarter-final of World Cup 2006. Miroslav Klose - He remains Germany’s most reliable goalscorer at big tournaments. The 29-year-old finished as top scorer at World Cup 2006.

Star player

Michael Ballack - Despite struggling with injury, Ballack will be the key man for Germany yet again. The skipper of the side, Ballack will have to recover his form quickly for this summer’s tournament. There is no German player who can adequately replace Ballack.

Verdict

Germany have all the ingredients for success. They have a relatively straightforward group, and a team that is eager to triumph this summer. A spot in the Final is a likely outcome.
