Greeks should fight through
The European Champions, two teams that almost always flatter to deceive, and upstarts led by Guus Hiddink. That is the constitution of Group D, which is probably Euro2008’s “group of life”. Greece, who are reigning European Champions, are not as talented as Spain, or maybe even Sweden, but their sheer organization will prove formidable. Russia, who wriggled their way through to Euro2008, have the Hiddink-factor, which will doubtless make them play beyond their means.
It is a group that can see the most unlikely finish. Conventional wisdom would suggest that Spain and Sweden take the top two spots, but Greek coach Otto Rehhagel and Hiddink are miracle workers. That factor coupled with Spain’s and Sweden’s inability to play to their potential could make for a very unpredictable group.
Spain vs Russia:: This tie ended 1-1 at Euro2004, and a similar outcome is definitely on the cards. Russia’s enthusiasm and Spain’s jitters will produce a draw. Prediction- Spain 1-1 Russia.
Greece vs Sweden: If Zlatan Ibrahimovic can produce his sparkling club form for country, then Greece stand little chance. However, Ibrahimovic has been known to go missing in games. Rehhagel will set out a team based on the collective; he does not have the good fortune of an Ibrahimovic. Prediction- Greece 0-0 Sweden.
Sweden vs Spain: Sweden and Spain each won a game against one another during qualifying. This will be an intriguing tie with very talented players on display. Sweden are due for a good tournament, but Spain should come out on top.. Prediction- Sweden 0-2 Spain.
Greece vs Russia: A potentially fascinating game between two excellent coaches. Russia will push Greece to the limit, but the latter should prevail. Prediction- Greece 1-0 Russia.
Greece vs Spain: Greece can definitely contain the likes of Cesc Fabregas and David Villa. A draw is a very likely result in this match. Prediction- Greece 0-0 Spain.
Russia vs Sweden: By this game both Sweden and Russia may be out of the reckoning. However, Hiddink will want to leave on a high note, and his Russia will push Sweden to the hilt. Sweden should see off the challenge, but after some difficulties. Prediction: Russia 0-1 Sweden.
Prediction of final standings:
- Spain
- Greece
- Sweden
- Russia
