With VAR making its debut in the 2018 World Cup, the technology was bound to steal the show sooner or later in Russia. And in the match between France and Australia, it did just that.
With Les Bleus, one of the tournament’s favorites, struggling to break down Australia, they were awarded a penalty with the help of Video Assistant Referee. However, not everyone was pleased with this decision.
Appeals for a spot-kick were initially denied by the match official after Griezmann was brought down inside the opposition’s box. However, after the ball had gone out of play, the referee halted play and made his way to the monitor to review the incident.
Deschamps’ men were given the penalty, must to the anger of the Socceroos’ players. Their frustration amounted to nothing, as Antoine stepped up to convert and give France a 1-0 lead.
Australia quickly scored an equalizer, but technology helped out the European giant once more. This time it was goal-line technology that made a cameo, as it confirmed that a shot from Paul Pogba had crossed the line after striking the crossbar.
Not everyone was pleased with that first-half VAR penalty, though. Many debated whether the official made the right choice by pointing to the spot.
Some argued that the call was on-point, thus validating the use of VAR. Others argued that it should not have come into play at all. Check out the best tweets below.
Nice performance from Australia, never deserved a defeat. Disgraceful decision for the pen, I thought VAR was meant to get the right call. Costly. #FRAAUS

Re the French penalty, #Risdon touches the ball then makes contact with #Griezemann, who goes to ground. In my book that’s a fair challenge. If there’s a decision to be made it’s whether or not Griezemann dived. Another #VAR fail if you ask me #AUSvFRA #WorldCup18 #Russia2018

This VAR is spoiling the game , taking too long and it’s makes a mockery of the excitement of the game , can’t believe they have implemented this in a World Cup

The WORST thing about VAR is this checking they do on nearly every single goal to see if anything was missed in the build up. That shouldn't be a thing for a multitude of reasons...

Keep goal line technology but VAR is meh

Ref gives correct decision looks at VAR then gives the wrong decision lol #FRAAUS

There are lots of bad things about modern football. Technology isn't one of them. All for it.#WorldCup #Russia2018 #FRAAUS #VAR

VAR gives France their first goal, goal line technology gives them their second. Tell me again how bad technology is in football.

Was it a pen? Yes. But VAR rules not properly applied. It was not a “ clear error “ by ref. To that extent France got lucky.

Cancel VAR pls @FIFAWorldCup

Ruining the fun
Almost five games in and VAR has so far disrupted nothing and overturned one clearly wrong decision.

Reasons to complain about it so far appear to be ‘I decided I didn’t like it ages ago’.
So with no Var and no goal technology, Australia would have win 1-0
