That decision helped France beat Australia 2-1 in their opening game, but not everyone was pleased.

With VAR making its debut in the 2018 World Cup, the technology was bound to steal the show sooner or later in Russia. And in the match between France and Australia, it did just that.

With Les Bleus, one of the tournament’s favorites, struggling to break down Australia, they were awarded a penalty with the help of Video Assistant Referee. However, not everyone was pleased with this decision.

Appeals for a spot-kick were initially denied by the match official after Griezmann was brought down inside the opposition’s box. However, after the ball had gone out of play, the referee halted play and made his way to the monitor to review the incident.

Deschamps’ men were given the penalty, must to the anger of the Socceroos’ players. Their frustration amounted to nothing, as Antoine stepped up to convert and give France a 1-0 lead.

Australia quickly scored an equalizer, but technology helped out the European giant once more. This time it was goal-line technology that made a cameo, as it confirmed that a shot from Paul Pogba had crossed the line after striking the crossbar.

Not everyone was pleased with that first-half VAR penalty, though. Many debated whether the official made the right choice by pointing to the spot.

Some argued that the call was on-point, thus validating the use of VAR. Others argued that it should not have come into play at all. Check out the best tweets below.
