LiveSoccerTV takes a look back at Atletico Madrid’s journey as they aim to clinch a third Europa League title at the expense of Marseille in Lyon.

After winning the competition in 2012 and falling against rivals Real Madrid in the finals of the 2014 and 2016 editions of the UEFA Champions League, Los Rojiblancos have another opportunity to add one more European silverware to their trophy collection. Diego Simeone’s men dropped out of the group stages of the Champions League this season but have endured a fascinating journey upon being enrolled in the Europa League.

Here, we take a look back at Atletico Madrid's prior encounters as we build up to Wednesday’s final in Lyon:

Last 32 vs. Copenhagen - (5-1 agg.)

After missing out on progression into the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League, the 2012 Europa League winners channeled their focus to announce their arrival in the Europa League in the best possible way. A 4-1 win away to Copenhagen virtually secured Atletico’s Round of 16 qualification.

The game was put to bed in the return leg in Madrid when they won by a goal to nil.

Last 16 vs. Lokomotiv Moscow - (8-1 agg.)

Goals from Saul Niguez, Diego Costa, and Koke sealed a 3-0 win for the Madrid club at the Wanda Metropolitano before they went on a full rampage in the return leg in Russia. Diego Simeone’s men run away with a 5-1 win against a hapless Lokomotiv Moscow side.

Quarter-final vs. Sporting CP - (2-1 agg.)

Koke scored Atletico Madrid’s fastest ever goal in the history of the Europa League when he found the back of the net 22 seconds into his side’s home game against Sporting. The lead was doubled by Griezmann 39 minutes later and the job was finished at the Jose Alvalade Stadium after the Portuguese side failed to score more than once in the second leg.

Semi-finals vs. Arsenal - (2-1 agg.)

Arsene Wenger’s desire of ending a 22-year spell as Arsenal manager was dealt a huge blow as he saw his side slump to defeat against a bullish Atletico Madrid side. Despite going a man down in the first leg at the Emirates, Diego Simeone’s men fought hard to earn a draw in London.

A lone goal by Diego Costa at the Wanda Metropolitano in the return leg eventually fired the Madrid club to the Europa League final in Lyon.
