The Spanish exec has been taking harsh criticism due to the player's excellent form, but there were more reasons behind his transfer to Liverpool.

As incredible as it may seem, Roma's chances of keeping Mohamed Salah before the season began were almost non-existent.

Given the Egyptian's fine form, questions have emerged about why Roma decided to let the player leave last summer. Following their 5-2 loss against Liverpool last night, and with Salah being involved in four of those goals, the giallorossi's Sporting Director, Ramón Rodriguez "Monchi", ellaborated on why the Italian side sold Salah.

"We had to sell him before June 30, 2017, if we wanted to comply with UEFA's Financial Fair Play rules. We almost had our hands tied on the matter, because he wanted to leave and we needed to cash in on his transfer. We sold him for over $50M," the Spanish exec stated.

The Spanish exec was hired by Roma after his excellent work with Sevilla, where he created three UEFA Europa League winning squads with a very low budget.

Despite the heart-breaking loss against the Reds, Roma's Sporting Director believes that Liverpool's mistake during the final 15 minutes have given them a lifeline for the second leg of this tie.

"We were almost finished, but they let us live. We bounced back from a 3-goal deficit before, all we have to do is try again," "Monchi" added.

The second leg of this UEFA Champions League tie will be played on Wednesday, May 2.
