Hector Herrera’s 90th minute strike might have decided where the Portuguese Primeira title will be heading.

A feisty encounter was predicted prior to the kickoff of this encounter and fans were certainly not disappointed. The game’s host, Benfica, entered the match with a point advantage over the second-placed FC Porto and could have virtually sealed their champion status with a win.

However, they were met with dismay inside the Estadio de Luz as Sergio Conceicao's’ men stung them and finessed their way to the summit of the league at the death. A loose ball, after an unsuccessful link-up play between Yacine Brahimi, Marega, and Aboubakar, fell at the foot of Hector Herrera.

The Mexican midfielder who was waiting at the edge of Benfica’s penalty area relentlessly let loose a fleeting cannonball into the top-right corner to steal the win for his side.

FC Porto subsequently assumed the first position with 76 points – two points more than the demoted Benfica– with just four games left to be played this season. Prior to the loss, Benfica had lost just 1 of their last 43 homes league games. Coincidentally, the defeat came against FC Porto.
