In an attempt to salvage pride and find a solution to their awful form, Arsenal players met this week amid the club’s current crisis. This is according to a report by the Guardian which claims this gathering occurred on Tuesday in the first training session after the League Cup final loss.
This means the meeting happened prior to the 3-0 loss at the Emirates to Man City, their second defeat to the Citizens in one week. Wenger was not present at this gathering, giving his men a chance to be frank about the status quo.
One senior player who was giving the speech broke down, claiming his kids ask him why the north London club is performing in such a bad manner. The Sun reports that it was vice-captain Laurent Koscielny who struggled to hold back the tears and was thus unable to continue talking.
“We are a big club,” one Gunners player said. “But we need more help from the coaches.” Another responded by saying “It’s not going to happen. We need to find the answers ourselves.”
While this meeting was not a brainstorming session on how to get rid of Le Prof, these remarks seem to prove that the French tactician no longer enjoys the trust of his own players. The same can also be said for the board, with the Sun writing that chief executive Ivan Gazidis and directors Sir Chips Keswick and Lord Harris of Peckham no longer believe Arsene should continue.
The final word lies with majority shareholder Stan Kroenke who will not make a decision on the 68-year-old’s future until the season ends. Nonetheless, a restructuring process is going on behind the scenes in preparation for the manager’s inevitable departure.
Wenger’s contract does not expire until the end of next season and he is reportedly determined to see out his deal. With the club traveling to Brighton for their next league game, both the players and the fans are hurting from the team’s fall from grace.
