Napoli pipped Juventus to the top spot in Seria A after cruising to a 2:0 victory over Benevento.

The Bianconeri took charge of the league earlier on Sunday afternoon by annihilating Sassuolo via a 7:0 scoreline. Their stay was, however, fleeting with Napoli demoting them right back to second position and establishing a point lead with their victory a few hours later.

A moment of brilliance by Dries Mertens gave Maurizio Sarri’s men the lead against Benevento inside 19 minutes. The little Belgian, after beating two players inside the host’s 18-yard box, lobbed the ball deliciously from a tight angle over a helpless Puggioni for his fourth goal in his last three games.

The 30-year-old forward was, however, subbed off with 14 minutes left to end proceedings after picking up an injury to the knee. Prior to this mishap, skipper Marek Hamsik ensured that there were no complications for the Blues by tapping in a pass put across Benevento's goal by Jose Callejon.
