The center back was deeply moved by the entire atmosphere surrounding the game between Barcelona and Las Palmas.

Gerard Piqué has never hidden his allegiance to Barcelona. Some fans even consider him as a true symbol of what being a Catalan citizen means, and today, during the incidents surrounding the referendum to decide if the region remains as a part of Spain, Piqué stepped up with a gesture most fans will appreciate.

Speaking after the 3-0 win against Las Palmas, the defender broke down in tears when asked about the protests that almost forced Los Blaugranas to forfeit the match. Piqué aimed a dig at his president, since most of the players didn't want to perform due to the political tensions in the city.

"When you go to vote, you have many options, but you have to do it. Today, I feel proud of the Catalan community, they respected everyone and didn't engage in violent behaviour. We all saw the images and were baffled by them, the situation took an ugly turn when the Civil Guards arrived," Pique stated, moments before he started crying.

When asked about his spot with the Spanish National Team, a visibly moved Pique broke down in tears and admitted he would forfeit the team if La Liga or the Spanish Football Federation authorities believe he's a liability during these moments of tension in Spain.

"I believe I can still play for La Roja because there are many people in this country that were disappointed by what happened here, who also believe in democracy. If that wasn't the case, I'd cease to attend the call ups. If our coach or anyone from the Spanish Federation believe that I represent a problem, I'd have no problem leaving the team before the 2018 World Cup," the player added.

Have a look at the exact moment when Piqué started crying as he took questions from sports journalists.
