In 2015, Australia hosted the AFC Asian Cup in 2015. The Socceroos made all the way to the final, where they faced South Korea, winning 2-1 to claim their first major title since joining the Asian confederation.
That success means Australia return to the FIFA Confederations Cup, which kicks off on June 17th. Here is what is in store for the Asian champions.
Australia Confederations Cup record
This will not be Australia’s first FIFA Confederations Cup appearance. They have competed in this competition three times before – in 1997, 2001, and 2005 – but have never won the title. They finished as runners-up in 1997, but have surprisingly lost more games (7) than they have won (5).
Australia begins their campaign against World Cup holders Germany on Sunday before facing Cameroon and then Chile.
Australia’s current form
They head into this game off the back of an embarrassing 4-0 loss at home to Brazil in a friendly. Although a recent 3-2 win over Saudi Arabia means they are in the running for a 2018 World Cup spot, the Socceroos’ 2017 has been mixed, winning only two of their four games.

The man on the tactician’s bench
Ange Postecoglou was the mastermind of Australia’s Asian Cup success. He took over the Socceroos on 23 October 2013, and has been in charge until now. He was tasked with rejuvenating a national side too dependent on their golden generation from 2006.
He has been in charge for 40 games, including their early 2014 World Cup exit. The manager has won 19 times (L13, D8).
