Although their domestic form has not been that impressive, Sevilla have again excellent in European competition. Unai Emery's side are bidding to feature in their third consecutive Europa League final, and with two away goals in hand, they are in a good position to achieved this. Of course, Ukrainian powerhouse Shakhtar Donetsk will try their utmost best to thwart Los Rojiblancos as they hope to win their first European crown since clinching this title back in 2009.
Sevilla
Thursday's hosts have already won the Europa League an impressive four times within the past ten years: in 2006, 2007, 2014, and 2015. Should they win this season's edition, Sevilla will become the first team since Bayern Munich to win three straight European titles in a row and they will also become the first side to win the Europa League on five occasions.
Given that they are presently seventh in La Liga, winning the Europa League will represent their only likely chance to feature in Europe next season. Sevilla will be coming into this game having suffered a 1-0 defeat to Espanyol over the weekend and further illustrates their overall poor form as of late; they have won just one out of their past seven La Liga matches. To sum things up, this means that domestically, Sevilla have picked up a dismal four points out of a potential 21 from those prior seven matches, so it has become quite apparent that European competition is where Emery has opted to focus on this term.
Thursday's fixture, coincidentally, will also represent a century of European fixtures for Sevilla's manager, and he will likely be able to celebrate this milestone by guiding the team into their third straight final. That is, provided los Rojiblancos avoid a shock loss on their home turf (or a draw in which there are plenty of goals on each side).
Shakhtar Donetsk
As for Shakhtar, they surely will be really regretting conceding a penalty so late in the match. For most of the game, the Ukrainian side were enjoying a 2-1 advantage, but with Sevilla snatching a late equalizer, they now arrive in Spain with an uphill battle ahead if they want to book their spot in this season's finals.
Whilst Shakhtar have an excellent away record since dropping down into the Europa League - with three wins against Schalke, Anderlecht and Sporting Braga - they have a poor record when it comes to facing Spanish sides. How bad? Well, to date, the Ukrainian champions have only won four out of their prior 22 meetings - not exactly promising reading ahead of taking on the reigning Europa League champions this Thursday in Seville.
