In seasons not too long ago, a clash between Chelsea and Manchester City could have been a Premier League title decider. In fact, normally, it would be. However, there has been nothing normal about this current campaign, and as things stand, neither the Blues nor the Citizens are in contention for the league title. Only one of these teams have a realistic chance at featuring in Europe next season, whilst the other are just hoping to finish the term in the upper part of the table.
Chelsea
Chelsea will be coming into this game having lost their first Premier League game since Guus Hiddink's arrival. It also was the first match the Blues had ever lost against Swansea City in Premier League play as they fell to a 1-0 reversal this past weekend, and having suffered that historical loss, they will be keen on rebounding against Manchester City at Stamford Bridge this Saturday.
Guus Hiddink's side are out of all cup competitions and as a result of their poor start to the season, are in no contention for the Premier League title. However, they are nine points away from a European football spot, and with six games remaining, mathematically, at least, they are not entirely out of the running just yet. Still, with new coach Antonio Conte coming in next season, Chelsea will want to conclude this campaign as high in the league standings as possible.
The Blues have an excellent record when it comes to playing against Manchester City at Stamford Bridge. Out of their past 17 matches, they have won 11 and lost just one. Yet, scoring goals have been an overall program for Chelsea - in their last seven Premier League games, they have netted just five - and will naturally want to do better if they intend to overturn last weekend's disappointing result.
In terms of personnel, Eden Hazard, who has been struggling with an injury, will not likely feature, and captain John Terry as well as Loic Remy are additional players who will are still on the treatment table. Willian, Gary Cahill, and Nemanja Matic are others who should return to the fold, whilst Diego Costa will make his return from suspension.
Manchester City
Manuel Pellegrini's men are flying high on confidence after booking their spot in the Champions League semi-finals earlier this week. It has been a historic European campaign for the Citizens, who are in the final four for the first time in their history and could go even further should they overcome Real Madrid in what will be a mouth-watering tie coming in a few weeks' time.
Until then, though, it's back to domestic affairs for Manchester City. The Sky Blues are still in contention for Champions League football and if things go their way, they could even catch Arsenal to pip the Gunners for third place. This would guarantee automatic qualification as opposed to having to go through the dreaded play-off rounds, and after some periods of inconsistency, things finally seem to be getting back on track for the ambitious Manchester-based club.
City will be seeking their third straight league win this weekend, and they will be relieved that top goalscorer Sergio Aguero, who surprisingly missed a spot-kick against PSG will be able to feature against Chelsea. However, skipper Vincent Kompany and Raheem Sterling will not have recovered fully to participate for this game.
