Match Preview
It is a make-or-break season for Senegal when they make their bow at the Samara Arena on Thursday. Following Nigeria’s exit from the World Cup after losing 2-1 to Argentina on Tuesday, the Teranga Lions remain Africa’s only last hope at the tournament.
The 2002 quarter-finalist has so far impressed, recording a win and a draw in the first two group stage matches. In order to make it out to the Round of 16 stage, at least a draw will be required of them.
The task, however, seems objectively complicated considering the side they come up against does not come across as a pushover. Boasting the likes of Radamel Falcao, Juan Cuadrado, and James Rodriguez, Colombia bounced back from an opening day defeat to Japan to snatch an emphatic 3-0 win over Poland.
With nothing but a win confirming their transition to the knockout phase, Los Cafeteros will certainly not come to town to play. They will aim to throw everything at Senegal’s setup and hope that the defensive line crumbles just as seen of the Africans in the game against Japan.
Still, the South Americans will have to be wary of their opponents who boast of two goals apiece in both group games they’ve featured in so far. All in all, one of the competition’s most intriguing matchups is expected to be served up at the Samara Arena.
Thursday’s clash will be the second between both nations after they played out a 2-2 draw in a friendly back in 2014.
