Klopp has to get his tactics on point if he wishes to overcome Los Blancos in their Kyiv clash.

The most important game of Liverpool’s season is fast approaching. Despite finishing fourth in the Premier League, it was a forgivable rank given that they are preparing for the Champions League final.

And with their highly-anticipated clash with Real Madrid comes tactical decisions that could make or break their odds of lifting the title for the first time since 2005. So far, Klopp has gotten it right for the most part, overcoming Man City in the quarter-final and then Roma in the semi-final.

However, Los Blancos is a totally different prospect. Here’s how the German boss should line up his team for the Kyiv tie.

Formation: 4-3-3

Why: It’s their traditional formation; one Klopp has utilized in 11 of their 12 Champions League games so far. It easily incorporated the Reds’ deadly attacking trio and has produced six wins and only defeat.

Starting lineup

Jurgen Klopp, Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, James Milner, Jordan Henderson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Liverpool, Real Madrid, Champions League final, UEFA Champions League

Why: Klopp doesn’t have many players to choose from. The likes of Chamberlain, Can, Matip, and Gomez are all injured and Lallana has struggled for fitness.

How Liverpool can benefit from this formation

While many don’t expect Liverpool to win the midfield battle, and rightly so, this formation could reap them benefits. Should Real Madrid try to outrun their opponent in the middle of the park, it could gift Salah and even Mane one-on-one situations with Zidane’s defender.

Should Asensio, or any other player that starts on the right flank, drop to help cover Salah; that would result in more breathing space for Klopp’s midfielders. Firmino, who tends to drop deep to pick up the ball as a false 9, could even benefit from this situation.

From this formation, the Merseyside giant could switch to 4-5-1 when without possession as they did in their memorable home and away wins against Man City.

Attacking with a three-man defense, with the full-backs pushing forward, would overwhelm Zidane’s defense but would also leave Liverpool prone to counter-attacks. For that reason, the Premier League side will have to be cautious especially if Asensio and Bale play.
