Mohamed Salah was an expected nominee, but one Premier League player missed out on the three-man shortlist.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced the three-man shortlist for the African Player Award, which unsurprisingly features Liverpool star, Mohamed Salah. The original list contained 11 of the continent’s biggest names, but they were cut down to three finalists.

Salah can be considered the favorite for this award, having already been named BBC’s African Player of the Year for 2017. He has performed extremely well for the Reds in his second spell in the Premier League, where he currently leads the top scorers chart.

The Egyptian ace also led his nation to World Cup qualification, scoring a 94th-minute penalty to book the Pharaohs a ticket to Russia. However, Salah will face stiff competition from Liverpool team-mate Sadio Mane.

The Senegalese ace also made it into the three-man shortlist after playing a vital role in Liverpool qualifying for the Champions League. He also led his national side to the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final before losing on penalties to eventual champions Cameroon.

The last name on the three-man shortlist is Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. His Dortmund side is currently struggling in the Bundesliga and failed to make it out of the Champions League group stage, but won the Premier League Golden Boot last season.

This means there was no room for Blues ace Victor Moses, who was influential in Chelsea’s Premier League success last season. Check out the shortlists for all of CAF’s awards below.
