CONCACAF Gold Cup HistoryThe CONCACAF Gold Cup is the prime Soccer competition of the CONCACAF Group of Nations. The Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) is made up of 40 nations. In addition to these 40 nations who compete to qualify for the 2007 GOLD CUP tournament, 3 additional nations from outside the CONCACAF jurisdiction are invited to participate in this tournament. This year the 3 teams invited are: X,Y,Z. In the very beginning, two governing bodies comprised what later merged to become CONCACAF, these were the Confederacion Centroamericana y del Caribe de Futbol (CCCF) founded in 1938 and the North American Football Confederation (NAFC) founded in 1946. The CCCF held 10 competitions in between 1941 and 1961 with Costa Rica taking the Lion share of this prizes winning the competition 7 times (41,46,48,53,55,60,61), the remaining 3 were won by El Salvador (43), Panama (51) and Haiti (57). The NAFC held only two championships both won by Mexico (47,49) In 1961, CONCACAF was formed and the first national team competition was organized in El Salvador, nine teams participated in this tournament and Costa Rica defeated the hosts in the final to take the first ever CONCACAF Championship. The competition was then held subsequently every two years. In 1965, it was Mexico that defeated the host nation Guatemala in the final of the 6 team tournament. In 1967, Guatemala won the competition in Honduras. In 1969, Costa Rica regained the crown as host nation. In 1971, Trinidad & Tobago hosted the competition, where Mexico won the their second tournament of this era. In 1973, the CONCACAF they raised the stakes by offering the winner direct entry to the FIFA World Cup. That year, the host nation Haiti surprised the world by winning the tournament and landing a qualifying berth for the 1974 World Cup held in West Germany. In 1991 the championship was re-ignited and branded as The CONCACAF GOLD CUP. Since then It has been won only by three nations; Mexico (4), Canada (1) and the United States (3). The UNCAF Nations cup and the Caribbean Cup serve as qualifying tournaments for the Gold Cup. |
