Frauen DFB Pokal History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The DFB-Pokal Frauen is Germany’s premier national women’s cup competition and the sibling to the men’s DFB Pokal tournament. It began back in 1980, with Bergisch Gladbach winning the inaugural title, beating TuS Wörrstadt 5-0 in the final in Stuttgart on June 2, 1981.

All teams from the Frauen-Bundesliga and 2. Frauen-Bundesliga can compete in the DFB-Pokal Frauen, including those promoted to the second division. Top-flight clubs usually enter the competition in the second round and non-Bundesliga clubs are automatically awarded the home advantage over their top-flight counterparts.

Eastern teams were granted participation from 1991 onward and the final had, for the most part, been held in only Berlin until 2010. Towards the end of the 2000s, hosting rights for the ultimate game switched over to the RheinEnergieStadion in Cologne.
