About Russia - Premier League

The Russia Premier League is Russia’s top football division. It was created in 2001 and it consists of 16 teams. The winner and the runner-up automatically enter the UEFA Champions League group stage; whereas the 3rd-placed team enters the Champions League second qualifying round. The 4th and the 5th placed teams qualify for the UEFA Europa League, whereas the two lowest teams get relegated to the First Division. The Russian Premier League usually operates between March and November due to the cold winter temperatures, and to avoid playing on frozen pitches.
