About Netherlands - Eredivisie

The Eredivisie (or "Honorary Division" in Dutch) is the top tier of football in the Netherlands. Like many of Europe's other leagues, the Eredivisie, which was founded in 1956, is based on a relegation-promotion system. Over the course of a campaign, 18 teams compete, and at the end, 15 teams are automatically guaranteed safety. A 16th spot is automatically given to whoever wins the Eerste Divisie ("First Division).

The process to decide the last two spots is a bit tricky, but it proceeds as follows: first, the bottom-placed side is automatically relegated to the second tier. Meanwhile, the next two clubs automatically feature in a two-legged play-off in two groups of four. These two groups are comprised of three Eerste Divisie sides plus one Eredivisie team, and whoever wins each quartet remains in the top flight.

PSV, who won their 23rd title, are currently the reigning champions. Cambuur and De Graafschap were relegated whilst Go Ahead Eagles (play-off winner) and Sparta Rotterdam (Eerste Divisie champions) were promoted. Willem II, who finished in 16th last term, also survived the play-offs.

Did you know: Since 1965, all but two of the Eredivisie titles have been won by Holland's "Big Three": Ajax, PSV, and Feyenoord. The only exceptions occurred in 1981 and 2009 (with AZ) and in 2010 (with FC Twente).
