Kanal 5 is a Swedish free-to-air television channel owned and operated by Discovery Networks. It was launched on March 27, 1989 under the name Nordic channel. The network would be rebranded in 1991 to TV5, and two more rebrandings would come the channel’s way before settling for Kanal 5 in 1996. It has been named as one of the most popular channels in Sweden for young audiences.
As stated before, Kanal 5’s programming has focused mostly on bringing entertainment to audiences between 15 and 24 years of age, leaving other demographics to be covered by other channels. Kanal 5 has made a name for itself by broadcasting shows related to topics such as TV series, movies, reality shows, documentaries, and sports.
Speaking about sports, Kanal 5 has only been involved in broadcasts for major events, such as some editions of the Winter Olympic Games.
Kanal 5 was conceived as a Standard Definition channel, but a High-Definition feed was developed since 2010 and eventually launched on February 1, 2011. Both feeds may still be available for users to watch, but the availability will be determined by the pay-tv service to which the user is subscribed.
