About
Danish Broadcasting Corporation History, Coverage, Features
DR, short for Danish Broadcasting Corporation, is a Danish public-service radio and television broadcasting company. It was founded on April 1, 1925 under the name Radioordningen. DR is the oldest and largest media company in Denmark and is also a founding member of the European Broadcasting Union. The company has been funded by a media license that is charged to all Danish households and companies that own TV sets, computers, smartphones and devices with access to the internet.
Over the years, DR has become one of the most relevant broadcasting companies in Europe by owning several TV channels, radio stations, and also operating online TV channels and websites. The company’s channels have aired all types of shows, including drama shows, comedies, documentaries, weather programs, news, sports broadcasts, debate shows, and films. While in-house productions have been quite popular among its viewers, the company has also made the most out of their deals with other companies by importing some comedy shows and movies, which have been aired in their original language but with Danish subtitles.
Speaking about sports, DR has covered a wide variety of disciplines, including football, handball, cycling, and athletics. Football broadcasts on this company have included the FIFA World Cup, the UEFA Euro, U-21 tournaments, and FIFA Women’s World Cup games.
DR launched its channels in Standard Definition, but some of its signals have added a High-Definition feed to their offer.
