Channel 5 History, Coverage, Features
Channel 5 is a free-to-air television channel launched on March 30, 1997. It is the fifth national terrestrial channel in the United Kingdom after BBC One, BBC Two, ITV, and Channel 4. It was rebranded for a brief period of time as Five, but it returned to its original name in 2011. Although it started as a public network, it was later acquired by Viacom on May 1, 2014.
Channel 5 is a general entertainment channel, with news broadcasts, children shows and TV series as some of its most watched programs in history. Channel 5 has imported several of its shows from the United States, including the NCIS franchise, the Law and Order Franchise and more. The network has also produced internally commissioned shows such as Big Brother and Celebrity Big Brother.
Speaking about sports, Channel 5 is known for broadcasting sports events not regularly aired by other networks. In the past, this channel aired UEFA Euro Qualifying games featuring the English National Team, which gathered the highest audience in this channel’s history back in 1999. Recently, Channel 5 has aired live cricket games as part of its unique sports coverage.
Channel 5 launched its HD feed on July 13, 2010. It is since become available on most pay-tv carriers in the UK on both HD and SD. Its Standard Definition feed is available on free-to-air TV as well.
