Portugal-Spain to bid for World Cup 2018

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

The football associations of Spain and Portugal have formally agreed to submit a joint bid to host the 2018 World Cup.

Portuguese Federation president Gilberto Madail signed the official FIFA document with Spanish counterpart Angel Maria Villar in Lisbon yesterday after an Iberian bid had been mooted for over a year.

Under the joint plan, Spain is expected to host the greater share of matches. FIFA regulations stipulate that candidates must provide approximately 12 stadiums capable holding at least 40,000 fans for group matches, and one stadium of at least 80,000 capacity to stage the opening match and final.

“We will create a joint commission to assess all FIFA conditions,” said Portuguese Federation president Gilberto Madail to reporters after signing the document.

The Iberian bid will expect strong support from the three South American representatives on FIFA’s 24-man executive committee.

FIFA announced last month there would be a simultaneous bidding process for the 2018 and 2022 tournaments. Other countries who are proposed to be bidding to host either or both of the tournaments are England, Australia, Russia, China, Qatar, the United States, Japan and a joint bid from Belgium/Holland.

The winning bids will be announced in December 2010.

ESPN2 to Air U.S.-Mexico Match February 11

Monday, January 12th, 2009

Contest kicks off the final round of 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying series for both teams

ESPN2 will televise the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying match between the U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team vs. Mexico Wednesday, Feb. 11, at 7 p.m. ET, live from Columbus Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio.  The telecast, available in high definition on ESPN2 HD, will feature the CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football) regional rivals in their first match of the final round of the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying series.

ESPN’s lead team of play-by-play commentator JP Dellacamera and analyst John Harkes will call the game with sideline reporter Pedro Gomez, who is fluent in English and Spanish and has handled several sideline reporting duties for U.S. Soccer and MLS events, including the 2008 MLS Cup on ABC.

The February 11 match will mark the third straight final round of FIFA World Cup qualifying matchup between the two CONCACAF powerhouse teams in Columbus.  In the first meeting Feb. 28, 2001 - dubbed the “Guerra Fria” (’Cold War‘) because the game-time temperature topped out at 29 degrees - for the 2002 World Cup, the U.S. won 2-0.  Four years and six months later, Sept. 3, 2005, the U.S. team earned a place in the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany with another 2-0 victory over Mexico.

The U.S., Mexico, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras and Trinidad & Tobago are the six nations competing in the 10-game home-and-away series, Feb. 11 - Oct. 14.  The top three teams will automatically advance to the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. The fourth-place team will compete in a two-game playoff to be held Nov. 14 and 18 against the fifth-place team in the South American (COMNEBOL) World Cup qualifying series.

Manchester Utd vs Chelsea Preview

Saturday, January 10th, 2009

Possible starting XIs

Man United: Van der Sar, Neville, Vidic, Ferdinand, Vidic, Park, Fletcher, Carrick, Ronaldo, Berbatov, Rooney

Chelsea: Cech, Bosingwa, Carvalho, Terry, Cole, Lampard, Ballack, Mikel, Kalou, Cole, Drogba

Manchester United Squad (from): Van der Sar, Kuszczak, Foster, Neville, Rafael, Vidic, Ferdinand, Evans, Evra, O’Shea, Ronaldo, Nani, Fletcher, Carrick, Scholes, Giggs, Park, Berbatov, Rooney, Welbeck, Gibson, Possebon.

Chelsea Squad - (from): Cech, Cudicini, Hilario, Bosingwa, Ferreira, Ivanovic, Terry, Mancienne, A Cole, J Cole, Obi, Lampard, Kalou, Anelka, Drogba, Stoch, Carvalho, Di Santo, Deco, Mineiro, Belletti, Ballack.

Manchester United host Chelsea on Sunday aware that a maximum haul would put them within a point of Luiz Felipe Scolari’s side with two games in hand.

An expectant Old Trafford will demand a marked improvement from the dire display which saw them lose a Carling Cup semi-final first leg at Derby in midweek, but with Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo and Dimitar Berbatov all to come in it shouldn’t be a problem.

After a week of domestic cup action both clubs will welcome a return to their bread and butter of league fare, with Chelsea eager to put a line under recent indifferent form that has seen them drop points against Fulham, Everton and West Ham in three of their last four Premier League games.

A 1-1 draw with Southend United is hardly the ideal preparation for a trip to Manchester but an away day could provide a welcome relief for Scolari and his side given it is games at Stamford Bridge that have proved their Achilles heel to date.

Away from the capital Chelsea have been sensational and it is nine victories on the road that have fuelled their title bid to date. Key to Chelsea’s potential success will be to quell the attacking threat provided by Rooney and co and on that score, the return of John Terry from a three-match suspension can only help.

Michael Ballack’s return will also be welcomed by Scolari, with the Brazilian likely to field the German alongside Frank Lampard and John Obi Mikel in a three-man midfield. Deco and Salomon Kalou will compete for a wide right role.

Jose Bosingwa has picked up a knock this week but the buccaneering full-back is expected to hand his manager another fitness fillip and declare himself fit to play.

Nicolas Anelka may be the Premier League’s top goalscorer but 16 goals in all competitions is unlikely to save him from the axe, as Didier Drogba will be given the nod to start.

With participation in the Club World Cup proving somewhat of a mid-season distraction, Sir Alex Ferguson will be eager to make up ground on leading duo Chelsea and Liverpool as quickly as possible. Few of those on the periphery made a case for regular involvement in midweek against Derby, so it will be a case of the big guns returning to the fray on Sunday.

First choice strike pair Rooney and Berbatov will reclaim their respective places ahead of Carlos Tevez, while a fortunate Ronaldo will figure after emerging from writing off his Ferrari on Thursday without a scratch.

Edwin van der Sar will return between the posts, while Rio Ferdinand will partner Nemanja Vidic at the heart of United’s defence providing he can shrug off a back complaint. Gary Neville will also likely start ahead of the exciting but inexperienced Rafael da Silva at right-back.

While history has dictated United usually play Chelsea for the final time at the back nd of the season, both managers will be well aware three points on Sunday could play a major role in deciding the eventual destination of this term’s title crown.

Abramovich dropped in UK football’s rich list

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

Manchester City owner Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a member of the Abu Dhabi royal family with a reported fortune of £15 billion, toppled Roman Abramovich in British football’s rich list.

It is the first time that the Chelsea owner has been knocked of the top spot of the UK’s Football Rich List, researched and published by FourFourTwo magazine, since buying Chelsea in the summer of 2003. Abramovich has slipped to third in the list behind second-placed Lakshmi Mittal, the 58-year-old Indian industrialist worth £12.5 billion who joined Formula One’s Bernie Ecclestone and Flavio Briatore after investing in fellow West London club Queen’s Park Rangers in December 2007.

It is believed the Russian oil tycoon lost an estimated £3billion in the economic downturn, reducing his wealth to around an estimated £7 billion.

Celtic shareholder and Irish entrepreneur Dermot Desmond is the richest person in Scottish football, eighth on the list overall, said to be worth £1.2billion.

The Rich List says David Beckham is the richest player associated with British football with a reputed personal fortune of £125 million, ahead of second-placed Michael Owen (£40 million) and third placed Wayne Rooney (£35 million). Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is at number 78 in the list (£22 million) and Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger at number 92 (£14 million).
