Setanta Hits The Air On Aug. 11
It’s official now, English soccer fans.
Rogers Broadcasting and Setanta Sports have just announced they’ll be teaming up to put a pay-per-view soccer and rugby channel on the air on Aug. 11 — the opening day of the English Premier League season, most importantly for ‘footy’ fans.
As we’ve reported in this space, the premium package is being priced at $14.99 per month. But Rogers is offering a free one-month trial period to its digital cable subscribers. Bell ExpressVu, the only other Canadian carrier that’s on board at the moment, is expected to offer a free trial of its own, too. What are you getting for your money? An average of 5-7 live EPL matches per week, with another 2-4 being aired on tape delay. Add in the 11 a.m. ET Sunday match on The Score, and a 10 a.m. Saturday game on Rogers Sportsnet, and it means every EPL game each week is being made available to viewers. That’s a first in this country.
As Setanta and BT join the Premier League party this season, fans of British football now have more ways than ever to watch football if they cannot travel to a game. And it is not only on television, with action also available on websites and mobile phones.

Irish broadcast group Setanta signed a deal with EchoStar Communications Dish Network in the US to carry its 24-hour digital sports channel.
Dish Network has 13.4 million subscribers and the deal will almost double Setanta’s potential penetration in US homes.
Setanta has US rights for live European football including Premier League matches as well as rugby and other sports. It also has a deal with DirecTV which has 16 million US customers.
A new soccer channel with extensive rights to live English Premier League games is set to begin operation in Canada in a matter of days.
Setanta Sports, an international content provider, will launch a Canadian channel in partnership with Rogers Communications.
Roger Hall, chief executive officer of Setanta’s international operation, confirmed Monday that the channel will start in “the very short term.”
Shane O’Rourke, president of Setanta’s North American operations, was even more explicit. He said it will be on the air in time for the start of the EPL season on Aug. 11.
“We’ll be up and running by the 11th,” he said.
