Portsmouth 3 - Bolton 1 (Premier League, August 18, 2007) Recalling past history, on his call-up to the England squad “Calamity James” let Anelka’s shot through his legs. But Bolton appear to be a soft touch this season, and Kanu exploited poor defending to level, before John Utaka ripped through the defence for the second. (First-half highlights here.) The Trotters never look likely to get back in the game, and just at the end Kanu was felled in the box and Matty Taylor scored the resulting penalty. See “Happy Harry” Redknapp’s post-match interview here, and contrast that with Sammy Lee’s after-match thoughts (and body language). (Read full article…)

Portsmouth 1 - Manchester United 1 (Premier League, August 15, 2007) Paul Scholes gave United the lead at Fratton Park with a fine strike after a lay-ff from Tevez. Portsmouth equalised early in the second-half with a header from Benjani after a lovely cross from substitute Matt Taylor. After Sulley Muntari was sent-off for two yellow cards, Cristiano Ronaldo also got sent-off for butting Richard Hughes.

Reading 1 - Chelsea 2 (Premier League, August 15, 2007) Seconds after coming on Andre Bikey gave Reading a shock lead first-half against Chelsea. Within a minute of the second-half Frank Lampard equalised after a storming run. And minutes later Didier Drogba scored with another lovely strike. (Read full article…)

Arsenal 2 - Fulham 1 (Premier League, August 12, 2007) Jens Lehmann’s first-touch of the season couldn’t have gone more horribly wrong, allowing David Healy to score after just one minute on his debut. It was a frustrating day for the Gunners, but they eventually turned it around in the dying minutes, first from van Persie’s thunderous penalty and then the injury time solo winner from Hleb.

Chelsea 3 - Birmingham 2 (Premier League, August 12, 2007) After early pressure, Birmingham took a shock lead when the returning Forssell instinctively headed the ball past Cech. Chelsea quickly hit back through new signing Pizzaro’s first goal as a Blue, and then they stormed into the lead when Malouda once again showed his class. But Birmingham’s own debutante Kapo, announced himself to the Premiership in style. Essien restored the advantage with a long range shot which the keeper should have done better with. The Blues set a top-flight record of 64 home games without defeat.

Aston Villa 1 - Liverpool 2 (Premier League, August 11, 2007) Liverpool went into the break one-up thanks to an own-goal from Martin Laursen. First-half highlights here. Villa captain, Gareth Barry, tied the match up from the spot after Carra handled in the box. But Steven Gerrard stole the plaudits with a magical free-kick to get the Reds off to a flyer.

Sunderland 1 - Tottenham Hotspur 0 (Premier League, August 11, 2007) It was a tense first-half (highlights here) to the Premiership season. The chance of the half fell to Murphy, well saved by Robinson. Spurs were never able to dominate the game, and were eventually beaten by Keano’s boys when Chopra was given too much time and space in the box, which he exploited to score the winner. Second-half highlights here. The post-match interview with Roy Keane can be seen here. Martin Jol can be seen here.
