Copa America 2007 - Venezuela

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

The 42nd edition of the Copa America kicks off in Venezuela on June 26 with the expectation that something is about to change in South American football. Long neglected by footballing authorities in the region, the competition has undergone something of a transformation in recent years, and this year promises much.

The investment made by the host country is impressive. A lot of money has been put into the country’s transport and communication infrastructure, while a total of three new stadiums have been built to hold the matches.
Indeed, with many of the smaller nations keen to build on some impressive performances in their World Cup Qualifying campaigns, the likes of Paraguay, Mexico and Brazil will all start the competition under new management, so there could be a few surprises.
Below is a team-by-team guide for the competition, which culminates in the final at Maracaibo on July 15. (Read full article…)

Marketing Beckham for the USA

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

This summer’s hottest premiere will take place on the soccer field when international star David Beckham
makes his debut with the Los Angeles Galaxy in July. As Beckham’s arrival in the U.S. nears, the debate on futbol and football begins with New Orleans Saints running back Reggie Bush swapping the pigskin for a soccerball. Bush traveled to Madrid to show off some of his fancy footwork and teach Beckham a few things about sports culture in the U.S. as an official welcome to the American sports scene.

“Since I signed with the Galaxy, you know every time I do an interview, I’m trying to get myself to say soccer because I’ve always said football,” Beckham told Bush during their meeting in Madrid where the two world-class
athletes traded sports for a day. (Read full article…)

Real Madrid win La Liga

Sunday, June 17th, 2007

Real Madrid 3 - Mallorca 1 (La Liga, June 17, 2007) One of the finest seasons of league football in living memory kept the Bernabeu (including Tom Cruise and Rafael Nadal) waiting until the last twenty-two minutes to see Madrid come from behind. Madrid went one down with a goal from Valera after seventeen minutes. Capello must take great credit for this win thanks to the introduction of Reyes who scored the equaliser and the third. Diarra scored the second. (In his final game in a Real shirt, Becks went close with a free-kick in each half, an interview with the former England captain can be seen here.) Celebrations can be seen here, here and here.

Gimnastic 1 - Barcelona 5 (La Liga, June 17, 2007) Goals from Puyol, Messi, Ronaldinho, Messi and Zambrotta were not enough for Barca who in truth lost La Liga because of Raul Tamudo and Espanyol. Grahn got the Gimnastic consolation. (Read full article…)
