Live and Exclusive Tournament Coverage Begins Sunday, December 10

Los Angeles, CA – November 28, 2006 – Fox Soccer Channel will once again offer live and exclusive coverage of the FIFA Club World Cup 2006 in Japan.

Previously known as the FIFA Club World Championship TOYOTA Cup, the FIFA Club World Cup 2006 will be played during the month of December by representatives of FIFA’s six confederations and will crown the world’s best club team. Among this year’s participants are the winners of the CONCACAF 2006 Champions Cup, Club América of Mexico; CONMEBOL 2006 Copa Libertadores champions, Internacional de Porto Alegre of Brazil; OFC 2006 club champions, Auckland City FC of New Zealand; the 2006 UEFA Champions League winners, FC Barcelona of Spain; the CAF Champions League winners, Al Ahly of Egypt; and the AFC Champions League winners, Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors FC of South Korea. MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER’S FIRST-EVER LIVE THREE-HOUR PROGRAMMING BLOCK

A few weeks ago, former German legend Karl-Heinz Rummenigge lamented the fact that German clubs could not compete with their Italian, English and Spanish counterparts due to the relatively paltry TV revenues they rake in. While German football prides itself on transparency, fiscal rectitude and booming attendances, the outlook on the TV market is less rosy.

The difference between the TV incomes of Europe’s top clubs is truly startling. Real Madrid recently signed a contract that will see them earn 115 million euros a season for the next five years. If the figure is shocking in and of itself, contrast it with the fact that many top German clubs earn about 25 million euros a year. Even allowing for differences in the way countries conduct TV business, the disparity is worrying if, of course, a (relatively) even playing field is what we want in the Champions League.
