Viva Italia! Serie A Returns to the Pitch on GOLTV

TORONTO - The legendary Italian league and the home to some of the biggest stars from around the world, Serie A, hits the pitch with its new season starting this Saturday on GOLTV Canada. The 2006-2007 seasons kicks off with three matches this weekend that include Roma, Livorno , Fiorentina, Inter Milan, AC Milan and Lazio.

With Italy winning the 2006 World Cup title many of that teams stars return on GOLTV that include, AS Roma’s Francesco Totti, Gennaro Gattuso from AC Milan, Daniele DeRossi from AS Roma and Fiorentina’s Toni Luca just to name a few.

GOLTV Canada will air close to 100 games of Serie A league play this season. Fans are able to take in all the action via Rogers Personal TV, channel 428, Videotron channel 61 (English) and channel 265 (Spanish), Mountain Cablevision channel 124, Aurora Cable channel 215, SaskTel channel 160, Cogeco Cable channel122 and Eastlink via channel 117. European Transfer Summary

England defender Ashley Cole completed his much-anticipated move from Arsenal to Chelsea right at the end of a busy transfer deadline day. Chelsea signed the 25-year-old while their defender William Gallas went to the Gunners in exchange. Jose Antonio Reyes was signed by Real Madrid, in a swap deal which saw Julio Baptista coming to Arsenal. Earlier, West Ham sealed a sensational deal for Argentina’s World Cup pair of Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano.

MIDDLESBROUGH:The confusion over central defender Robert Huth’s (Friday, 0900) move finally comes to an end. It seemed the deal had collapsed with the paperwork not being completed on time and Chelsea appearing unwilling to let two centre-backs go without signing more cover. But the signatures that matter are on the dotted line and Huth is a Boro player. He joins Jason Euell (1636) in switching to the Riverside.

The transfer market in Italy

Ricardo Oliveira’s arrival at Milan will probably not tip the Richter scale of glamour but it is nonetheless a fantastic move by the Rossoneri. After Andriy Shevchenko departed for Chelsea – giving ludicrous reasons in the process – Milan were embroiled in the ‘Calciopoli’ scandal and thus were reticent in the market. Mind you the club always vigorously asserted its innocence but realized that its self-appraisals meant little in the judicial process.

When the first verdicts came out in July, Milan were kicked out of the Champions League and were handed a rather debilitating -15 points penalty for the upcoming season. The outrage was predictable and the proclamations of innocence even more emphatic.
The club appealed and were reinstated back into the Champions League and saw their points penalty reduced to -8. But wait, let’s not forget how UEFA took a few days to decide if they would let the club back in their competitions due to their involvement in the scandal.
