La Liga Live On GOLTV In Multi-Year Extension

TORONTO, ON – GOLTV, the only channel dedicated entirely to soccer in the America’s, announced this week an extension of the network’s Spanish League broadcast rights (known as La Liga).

The agreement includes live and exclusive rights to air all of the league’s teams including legendary rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona, as well as Atletico de Madrid, Valencia, Villarreal, Betis, Celta de Vigo, Deportivo La Coruna, Sevilla, Racing plus many more.

This means Canadian fans have access to watching some of soccer’s biggest stars, each and every week, including reigning FIFA player of the year Ronaldinho, England’s David Beckham, Italy’s Cannavaro, plus Zambrotta, Lionel Messi and many, many more.

Beyond this important renewal, GOLTV is also proud to call itself the home to the world’s top soccer leagues, including Italy, Brazil and most recently Germany, as well as most of the South and Central American leagues including: Colombia, Bolivia, Ecuador, Guatemala, El Salvador, Uruguay, and Honduras.

In their opening Group G match for the Euro 2008 Qualifiers, Romania host Bulgaria . The Bulgarians have made some last minute changes to the roster as Aleksandar Tunchev replaces injured CSKA Sofia teammate Valentin Iliev. After impressive displays in the U-21 squad, Juventus striker Valeri Bozhinov and Hannover 96 midfielder Chavdar Yankov have also been called up.

16:00 - 18:00 ET– Euro 2008 Qualifiers: Hungary v Norway
In the first match of their respective Group C campaigns, Hungary clashes with Norway . The Hungarians have not made any changes to the lineup that saw them defeat Austria in a recent friendly. The Norwegians are hoping that Liverpool left-back John Arne Riise will be match fit. He sustained an ankle injury in Liverpool’s season opener against Sheffield United. (Read full article…)

Northern Ireland sends special strip to New Orleans pub team

A New Orleans soccer team received a special set of jerseys today - one year to the day since their uniforms were washed away by Katrina.

The Irish Football Association donated the tops to Finn McCool’s Football Club, named after the Irish bar in Mid City where they were formed. The pub is owned by three Northern Irish ex-pats and is the headquarters of both the Celtic and Rangers supporters’ clubs in the city. It was flooded with eight feet of water when the levees broke on August 29 last year and has since been gutted, rebuilt and reopened. The hurricane killed around 1,600 people in Louisiana and ravaged an area the size of Britain. (Read full article…)

Hasan Saiyid pays tribute to World Cup winning coach Marcello Lippi.

While the likes of Gianluigi Buffon, Fabio Cannavaro and Andrea Pirlo may have provided the more iconic visuals of Italy’s World Cup triumph, coach Marcello Lippi’s demeanour — ruffled only by vehement Gennaro Gattuso embraces and Italy’s goals in the latter stages of the tournament — was the calm in the storm, which raged with a match-fixing scandal back home.

Many coaches at the World Cup talked a great game, extolling the supposed qualities of their teams. Some of the coach talk was pugnacious, some defiant but most of it was misguided. (Read full article…)

Boro Shocker Over Chelsea

Wednesday’s shock 2-1 win for Middlesbrough against Chelsea has turned the Premiership upside down in just the first week.

It was an unusual match because Boro was the better side in the first 15 minutes, but Chelsea scored against the run of play through Shevchenko. With Chelsea leading 1-0 for most of the match, the Blues seemed to take their foot of the gas and failed to put the match out of Boro’s reach.
