Champion’s League Quarter Final Draw

Wednesday, March 5th, 2008

The Champion’s League Quarter-finals Pot is almost set. The following teams have advanced:

  • Manchester United
  • Chelsea
  • Arsenal
  • FC Barcelona
  • Roma
  • Schalke
  • Fenerbahce

The 8th and final team of the pot will be decided on March 12th, 2008 when Inter Milan host Liverpool at the San Siro.
Liverpool go to Milan with a 2-0 advantage. It will be extremely difficult for Inter to overcome such as deficit. If Liverpool score 1 goal, Inter will need to score 4 goals in regulation time to over the aggregate scoreline. There is a good chance Liverpool will progress, establishing 4 English teams in the final 8.

When does the UEFA Champions League Quarter Final draw take place?

The Quarter Final Draw will take place on the same date as the Semi-Final Draw will take place. March 14th, 2008.

The Champion’s League Quarter Finals will take place on the 8th and 09th April, 2008

Both UEFA club competition draws will be transmitted live on uefa.com and on Eurosport.

Ivory Coast vs Guinea

Sunday, February 3rd, 2008

Guinea will field a weakened team against tournament favourites Ivory Coast, as stand-in captain Bobo Balde is doubtful after a thigh injury.

Ivory Coast vs Guinea - February 3rd at 3:30 pm Eastern

Inspirational midfielder Pascal Feindouno, who usually captains the side, is suspended and misses the game.

Ivory Coast rested several regular players in their 3-0 defeat of Mali in their final group game.

The Elephants, led by Didier Drogba, have been the most impressive side at the tournament so far.

Nigeria vs Ghana

Sunday, February 3rd, 2008

African football has over the years served up its fair share of compelling rivalries, but Ghana versus Nigeria outshines them all.

Nigeria vs Ghana - February 3 - at 12:00 Eastern

These two nations just love to knock the living daylights out of each other (in anything), but more so on a football pitch.

In my opinion, their rivalry is the one by which all others are measured and the Africa Cup of Nations will heat up on Sunday when they collide in a quarter-final tie in Accra.

As one Ghanaian journalist put it on TV the other day, “this is the only game that matters to every Ghanaian”.

India’s Soccer Dilemma: 1.3 billion people, yet 145th in World Ranking

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

It’s said that people power always rules. However, this cannot be said true when it comes to India’s stature in World Soccer. A country with 1.3 billion people and millions of sports-crazy fans still fails to produce 11 top players who can make India’s presence felt on the global arena. The biggest irony is that India is currently languishing at 145th position in the latest FIFA rankings.

Fox 6 (XETV) Soccer Coverage.

Monday, November 12th, 2007

TO ALL SOCCER REPORTERS AND SUPPORTERS  One has to go back to the earlier rounds of the Superliga and Major League Soccer in August to find any MLS highlights or news by Fox 6 (XETV) on any of their nightly sports news reports, including  the 30-minute weekly series “That Sunday Sports Show”…  They were the only station in the region who did not show MLS playoffs, and specifically the astounding Taylor Twellman bicycle kick this past Thursday night that won the Eastern Conference Championship.  They are the only station in Southern California who has shown no MLS news in all of September, October, and November’s first 10 days.  (Read full article…)

Goals for November 6th, Champions League

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

Liverpool 8 - Besiktas 0 (Champions League, November 8, 2007) Liverpool had a two goal cushion at the break, firstly through Crouch after the ball fell kindly in his path and then through Benayoun’s well-hit strike. The Reds went goal crazy in the second half, with Benayoun bagging the second and third of his treble before seeing Steven Gerrard (69), Ryan Babbel (79 and 81) and Crouch (89) also net. The result broke Arsenal’s short-lived reign of the biggest win in Champions League history.

Schalke 0 - Chelsea 0 (Champions League, November 8, 2007) Chelsea rode their luck to escape with a goalless draw. Schalke almost went ahead when Rafinha hit the top of the bar with a cheeky lob, and Peter Lovenkrands raced clear on the left only to smack a shot against the left-hand post in the dying moments. The game ended with high tensions clearly on show.

Goals for Saturday, October 27, 2007

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

Chelsea 6 - Manchester City 0 (Premier League, October 27, 2007) Frank Lampard took center stage, feeding in Essien who beat Hart into the opposite corner. Petrov worked Cech with a free-kick, but Chelsea then doubled their lead over City when Lampard’s outstanding pass beat Richards, and Drobga collected to finished expertly. Drogba bagged his second when Lampard’s shot was saved, before Michael Essien set up Joe Cole, Salomon Kalou and (even) Andriy Shevchenko for the remaining goals.

Manchester United 4 - Middlesbrough 1 (Premier League, October 27, 2007) Nani opened with a 30 yards screamer, only for Jeremie Aliadiere quickly equalised with a precise header after Tuncay teased O’Shea. Stuart Downing then embarrassed himself to play in Rooney to smash United’s second. (First-half highlights here.) After the break Carlos Tevez slotted in after a sublime Rooney back-heel and he added a fourth with a deflected shot.
