Rangers manager Walter Smith has told his players they face a different type of challenge when they take on Zenit St Petersburg in the Uefa Cup final.

The Glasgow club reached the Manchester showpiece with the help of some superb defensive displays at Ibrox.

“This season has been terrific for us so far and we’ve got opportunities to make it even better,” Smith said.

“It’s a nice surprise to be there, and hopefully we can do well enough on Wednesday night to win it.” Zenit will be without their top scorer, Pavel Pogrebnyak, the striker being suspended after a semi-final booking.

But Russia playmaker Andrei Arshavin, Czech international Radek Sirl and Dutch midfielder Fernando Ricksen return after their bans.

Swede Peter Frojdfeldt will referee the final, having officiated the Champions League quarter-final between Liverpool and Arsenal at Anfield.
