FIFA World Cup Tie-Breaking Rules
For the curious ones trying to figure out who advances in the event of a 3-4 way tie in the group stage, here is a reference to FIFA’s tie-breaking procedure.
Tie Breaking for Group Phase in Germany 2006 (Article 31-5):
The ranking of each team in each group will be determined as follows:
a) greatest number of points obtained in all group matches;
b) goal difference in all group matches;
c) greatest number of goals scored in all group matches.
If two or more teams are equal on the basis of the above three criteria, their rankings will be determined as follows:
d) greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned;
e) goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams concerned;
f) greater number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams concerned;
g) drawing of lots by the Organising Committee for the FIFA World Cup.
So looks like option g) refers to the old flipping a coin routine. Let’s hope for the evolution of this sport that we don’t have to resort to such an unfair method to eliminate a nation’s dreams from advancing to the next stage.
