Fox 6 (XETV) Soccer Coverage.
TO ALL SOCCER REPORTERS AND SUPPORTERS One has to go back to the earlier rounds of the Superliga and Major League Soccer in August to find any MLS highlights or news by Fox 6 (XETV) on any of their nightly sports news reports, including the 30-minute weekly series “That Sunday Sports Show”… They were the only station in the region who did not show MLS playoffs, and specifically the astounding Taylor Twellman bicycle kick this past Thursday night that won the Eastern Conference Championship. They are the only station in Southern California who has shown no MLS news in all of September, October, and November’s first 10 days. They did not show the Superliga final in August, another match with a great bicycle kick goal that changed the match, and one with David Beckham starting the game and famously being injured. They have not had one word on Beckham since he returned to play, and that includes the remaining season (all matches were shown locally on Fox Sports Net), the benefit for the local wildfires victims, and every match he’s played since then. Unlike other local TV news in the region in recent months, Fox 6 has also omitted every highlight of local college soccer, including the 3 universities men’s and women’s programs, have not shown a single feature story on any local college or pro player, and have failed to mention every single award won by local university teams in all conferences (WCC, MWC, PAC 10). They did not have their cameras at any match of any team this season, and did not show any video of the press conference which they attended or any video of any kind. Local teams had live televised matches, including Fox Soccer Channel and The Mtn., and other stations showed highlights of televised matches and were present at some games. Furthermore, they did not show or mention either of the World Cup matches on the final day of the WWC (USA-NORWAY and BRAZIL-GERMANY), and have failed to mention in any way any of the USA or MEXICO national teams matches or news since the WWC semis. This ignored news not only included the final day of the World Cup, but local players called to camp for the men, the men’s first win in Europe since prior to the 2006 World Cup, the big Mexico men’s defeat in LA (shown by their parent network Televisa and 2 others in San Diego), and 3 friendly matches in the U.S. between the American Women and Mexico. There has been an extensive amount of on-air negativity toward soccer by anchors, and off the air by personnel when inquiruies were made on the reasons for the lack of coverage. There were major errors in the few stories on soccer they did air in recent months, and while there were only a few such errors, the proportionate error rate is high due to the low number of stories total. Total number of recent soccer mentions (month of October to Nov 10) is THREE (1 min). This is with over 150 minutes of original produced news that airs nightly. snippet of findings to be published Monday ( 12 )SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER 2007 (added preliminary data on first 10 day of November) With as little or less sports news on weeknights as XETV, KSWB showed news on all of these soccer events during this time period on their CW News at 10.
