Goals on Saturday, October 20, 2007

Everton 1 - Liverpool 2 (Premier League, October 20, 2007) (Longer highlights here.) Liverpool started sprightly and had a questionable offside decision chalk out a goal for Voronin. But Everton took more control as the half progressed, creating more chances, and the Toffees were rewarded for their endeavor when Sami Hyypia sliced a ball past Reina. The turning point of the game came when Hibbert was sent off for stopping Gerrard’s surge in the box, and Kuyt converted the resulting penalty. The Reds struggled to make their extra man count, wasting several good chances. But in the final stages, Phil Neville ’saved’ Lucas’ shot on the line, earning him the second red card of the game, and Kuyt once again beat Howard from the spot.

Middlesbrough 0 - Chelsea 2 (Premier League, October 20, 2007) Want-away Chelsea striker, Didier Drogba, beat Middlesbrough’s offside trap to send the Blue one up. Cech preserved the lead with a point-blank save form Mido’s header. Chelsea extended their lead in spectacular fashion thanks to Alex’s thunderous, swerving free-kick.

Arsenal 2 - Bolton 0 (Premier League, October 20, 2007) (Longer highlights here.) Arsenal came close to taking the lead against Bolton, but Adebayor’s header went the wrong side of the post. Aston Villa 1 - Manchester United 4 (Premier League, October 20, 2007) (Longer highlights here.) Agbonlahor headed Villa in front, but United equalised when Rooney capitalised on a Zat Knight mistake. Rooney then collected a precise pass from Tevez, and he had time to control the ball before slotting it past Carson. Villa then left in a third goal just before the break when Craig Gardner sliced the ball into his own net after Ferdinand’s strike on goal. (First-half highlights here.) It then went from bad to worse for Villa, as both Reo-Coker and Scoot Carson were sent off, with the latter incident resulting in Rooney’s penalty kick which was sensationally saved by Stuart Taylor. Yet United were relentless, and scored their fourth from Giggs’ shot with deflected off Laursen.

Blackburn 4 - Reading 2 (Premier League, October 20, 2007) Reading were beaten after just 30 minutes courtesy of goals from McCarthy, Roque Santa Cruz and Tugay (an absolute belter). Roma then hit back, firstly with a Totti penalty, followed by Perotta’s rebound off Totti’s shot. But Napoli would not lie down and came back in the game when Hamsik thumped the ball past Curci. Their parity was short-lived as Iezzo fumbled De Rossi’s shot, only for it to be restored once more through Gargano’s screamer into the far top corner.
