Euro 2008 Goals - October 17, 2007

Russia 2 - England 1 (Euro 2008 qualifier, October 17, 2007) Russia dominated the opening thirty minutes without taking the lead, including Kerzhakov’s early penalty claim which fell on deaf ears and Zyrianov’s shot which hit the post. England then burst into life when the front two linked up expertly to score a wonder goal out of nothing. Owen’s flick-on was chested down by Rooney, who volleyed the ball into the roof of the net. England had two fantastic opportunities to extend their lead. Gerrard missed a sitter and Richards failed to connect at the back post. After almost constant Russian pressure throughout the second-half, Wayne Rooney stupidly brought down Zyrianov (outside the box), allowing Pavlyucenko to level from the spot. The English nightmare was completed only minutes later, as Robinson failed to handle a shot and the ball landed into the path of Pavlyucenko who netted his second and the game winner.

Georgia 2 - Scotland 0 (Euro 2008 qualifier, October 17, 2007) A headed goal from 17-year-old Levan Mchelidze put Georgia ahead at the break, before Siradze tucked home the second. Scotland left knowing they need to beat World Champions Italy at Hampden to qualify.

Kazakhstan 1 - Portugal 2 (Euro 2008 qualifier, October 17, 2007) Portugal were struggling with six minutes left, until Makukula scored on debut with a header from Quaresma’s right-wing cross. Ronaldo then made it two in injury time when he shot high into the net from a pass by Nani. Byakov headed a late consolation.

Turkey 0 - Greece 1 (Euro 2008 qualifier, October 17, 2007) European champions Greece qualify to defend their title thanks to Amanatidis’ late winner.

Germany 0 - Czech Republic 3 (Euro 2008 qualifier, October 17, 2007) Already qualified Germany fell behind to an early Czech goal as Koller set up Sionko for a simple finish. And the Germans fell further behind when Matejovsky evaded several challenges to finish coolly. The humiliation was sealed when Plasil ran clear to easily score the third.

France 2 -Lithuania 0 (Euro 2008 qualifier, October 17, 2007) Ribery was prevented from scoring with a long range shot which was fabulously pushed onto the bar by the keeper. And the French were let off the hook when Klimavacius’ curling effort hit the post. Benzema came close with a dribble and shot which went past the post, and Ribery shaved the post in the second-half. The French finally went ahead when Henry’s deflected shot gave the keeper no chance, and the Barca striker made it two by bursting through the high defensive line to slot home. Henry has now eclipsed Michel Platini to become France’s all-time record goalscorer.

Holland 2- Slovenia 0 (Euro 2008 qualifier, October 17, 2007) Wesley Sneijder gave the Dutch the lead after intercepting a horrible back-pass, and just before the end of the game Huntelaar bagged a second.
