Football Goals and Videos - September 29, 2007

Portsmouth 7 - Reading 4 (Premier League, September 29, 2007) Pompey went goal crazy, with Benjani netting a hat-trick in Premier League’s highest scoring game of all-time. After two early Benjani goals, Hunt struck on the stroke of half time and David James then gifted Kitson an equaliser. Hreidarsson restored the lead before James atoned for his error by keeping out a Shorey penalty. Benjani restored the two-goal lead and Niko Kranjcar, Sean Davis and Sulley Muntari sealed victory, with Shane Long and Shorey responding late on.

Manchester City 3 - Newcastle 1 (Premier League, September 29, 2007) Sven’s boys continue to impress, this time after coming back from Martin’s opener. Martin Petrov’s purple patch was furthered by a goal and an assist, the second scored by Mpenza. Elano, who had a fantastic game along with Richards and Ireland, capped the performance with an unstoppable free-kick into Given’s apex.

West Ham 0 - Arsenal 1 (Premier League, September 29, 2007) Arsenal went ahead at West Ham when Hleb swung in a cross in from the right and Robin van Persie’s downward header beat Green at his near post. First-half highlights here. RVP came close to a second with a shot that rattled the post, before the former Gunner, Freddy Ljungberg had a goal disallowed for offside.

Wigan 0 - Liverpool 1 (Premier League, September 29, 2007) (Longer highlights here.) Liverpool were unable to find the breakthrough during the first-half at Wigan. Gerrard had an early shot saved, before Torres had a one-on-one and bicycle-kick go wide. Wigan came back into the game after the break when Marcus Bent had a goal chalked off for offside, and Scharner just missed with his improvised effort. But the Reds stole ahead when Yossi Benayoun got his second of the week with a sublime turn and (weak) shot. Unfortunately, the game was marred by crowd disturbances.

Chelsea 0 - Fulham 0 (Premier League, September 29, 2007) Shevchenko missed a good chance to score at the front post after good work from Essien, but a frustrating performance was then made worse as returning striker, Didier Drogba, got sent off for a second yellow. The knives will surely be out now for Avram Grant.

Birmingham 0 - Manchester United 1 (Premier League, September 29, 2007) (Longer highlights here.) Birmingham were unlucky not to take the lead as Gary McSheffrey’s header was cleared off the line by Rio Ferdinand. The breakthrough came when dozy defending from Queudrue allowed Ronaldo to steal in, bear down on Taylor and clip the ball beyond his despairing dive. A top save from Kuszczak preserved United’s lead.

Derby 1 - Bolton 1 (Premier League, September 29, 2007) Honours even in the basement battle. Anelka’s deflected effort cancelled out Kenny Miller’s early goal to ensure Bolton stayed off the bottom of the Premier League at Derby’s expense.

Sunderland 1 - Blackburn 2 (Premier League, September 29, 2007) David Bentley and Roque Santa Cruz stunned the home side by netting just after the break. Grant Leadbitter hit a 90th-minute reply for the Black Cats.

Gomez scored a consolation, but the champions have already lost four games this term.

Werder Bremen 8 - Arminia Bielefeld 1 (Bundesliga, September 29, 2007) Bremen produced the biggest Bundesliga rout in 19 years. Peter Niemeyer scored in the 17th, Almeida in the 35th and 88th, Sanogo in the 41st and 44th, Markus Rosenberg in the 66th and Diego in the 85th. Germany defender Per Mertesacker also gave himself a gift on his 23rd birthday by heading in a goal in the 59th. Wichniarek scored a consolation (offside?).

Roma 1 - Inter Milan 4 (Serie A, September 29, 2007) Defending champions Inter Milan hammered 10-man Roma after Giuly’s straight red card for a handball on his own goal-line. Ibrahimovic converted the resulting penalty kick, while Perrotta’s equaliser proved a false dawn as Crespo, Cruz (great strike) and Cordoba all scored for the Nerazzurri.

Livorno 0 - Fiorentina 3 (Serie A, September 29, 2007) Osvaldo put the Viola ahead at the stroke of half-time. Visiting coach Nando Orsi sent off for dissent during the break and then Livorno were reduced to ten men after Loviso was sent off. Levante 1 - Barcelona 4 (La Liga, September 29, 2007) Thierry Henry scored twice in the first-half, the second a neat finish, to give Barca the lead at the break. Henry completed his hat-trick just after the break, before Messi scored two minutes later to make it four. Levante pulled one back from the penalty spot through Viqueiria. How can Ronaldinho get back into the side?
