Goals of the week - Sept 26

Manchester United 0 - Coventry 2 (League Cup, September 26, 2007) Coventry, backed by 11,000 fans, went ahead when Michael Mifsud turned in Michael Doyle’s cross. And Mifsud killed off United, firing high into the net after Jay Tabb fashioned an opening.

Hull 0 - Chelsea 4 (League Cup, September 26, 2007) Hull managed to hold off a much-changed Chelsea side until the 37th minute when Scott Sinclair struck with a low drive - his first goal for the club. Kalou headed in the second just after half-time before Steve Sidwell’s swerving strike quickly made it three. Kalou completed a convincing win by crashing home a drive.

Tottenham 2 - Middlesborough 0 (League Cup, September 26, 2007) Spurs finally went ahead through Bale, as he sprung the offside trap before rounding Brad Jones and slotting home. The win was wrapped up as Huddlestone headed home after great work from Lennon down the right.

Blackpool 2 - Southend 1 (League Cup, September 25, 2007) Michael Jackson was the hero for Blackpool after coming off the bench to seal an extra-time victory over Southend.

Luton 3 - Charlton 1 (League Cup, September 25, 2007) The League One side went behind in the fourth minute when Dean Sinclair bundled the ball in after keeper Brill had kept out Todorov’s header. Steve Robinson volleyed a superb 20-yard equaliser, but Matthew Spring headed Luton in front in the dying seconds of the first period of extra-time.

Dundee 1 - Celtic 2 (CIS Cup, September 26, 2007) Celtic took the lead when Scott Mcdonald headed home a set-piece. Celtic pull further ahead when precise passing set up Hesselink who finished calmly. Kevin McDonald pounced to steer Dundee back into the game. Gordon Strachan gave an entertaining post-match interview.

Inter Milan 3 - Sampdoria 0 (Serie A, September 26, 2007) Ibrahimovic opened the scoring before adding an unbelievable second after a sensational turn took out three Sampdoria defenders. Luis Figo added a third just before the hour mark to end any hopes of a visitors’ comeback.

Palermo 2 - AC Milan 1 (Serie A, September 26, 2007) Clarence Seedorf beat Palermo’s offside trap to give AC Milan the lead. Palermo equalised in controversially when Amauri handled before and crossing low for Diana to convert. Incredibly, Palermo turned it all around in the final seconds of injury time as Kalac couldn’t keep out Miccoli’s incredible set-piece, after the defensive wall split.

Fiorentina 2 - Roma 2 (Serie A, September 26, 2007) Adrian Mutu’s late penalty earned 10-man Fiorentina an epic draw, but Frey was Man of the Match. Roma took the lead with a spectacular chip Mancini. Gamberini volleyed in a corner to level. Giuly put Roma back in front before Mutu’s late goal.

Juventus 4 - Reggina 0 (Serie A, September 26, 2007) Athough the game was scoreless at half time, the Old Lady cut loose in the second-half. Legrottaglie broke the deadlock with Salihamidzic adding a second minutes later. Late efforts from Trezeguet and Palladino added the icing on the cake for Juve.

Parma 2 - Torino 0 (Serie A, September 26, 2007) Parma grabbed their first win. Reginaldo buried the first after a scrap in the box, and Corradi scored again after good work from Coly and Pisanu.

Napoli 1 - Livorno 0 (Serie A, September 26, 2007) Napoli grabbed a late win thanks to Roberto Sosa’s late strike.

Bayern Munich 5 - Energie Cottbus 0 (Bundesliga, September 26, 2007) (Longer highlights here.) It goes from bad to worse for Cottbus, who remain rock-bottom in Germany after sacking popular head coach Petrik Sander just last weekend. Bayern inflictied the humiliating defeat with five second-half goals thanks to a Klose hat-trick (goals two and three) and one apiece from Demichelis and Toni.

Barcelona 4 - Zaragoza 1 (La Liga, September 26, 2007) Barcelona got off to a quick start against Zaragoza when golden-boy Messi sweetly struck a first-time left foot shot, after collecting a pass from Henry. Zapater then stunned the Nou Camp with a bullet past Valdes. But nothing can stop Messi, who put Barca back in front. Iniesta scored a back-post tap-in after some lovely build up play from Deco for the third. Barca then hammered in a fourth on the stroke of half-time when a fantastic Deco free-kick rebounded kindly for Marquez to head in.

Athletic Bilbao 0 - Atletico Madrid 2 (La Liga, September 26, 2007) Aguero netted his fourth of the season for the opener, before Forlan let rip into the top left of goal with a stunner.

Mallorca 4 - Valladolid 2 (La Liga, September 26, 2007) After trailing two-nil at the break, Mallorca scored four in the second-half after some horrible defending from Valladolid.

Valencia 2 - Getafe 1 (La Liga, September 26, 2007)

Real Murcia 0 - Almeria 1 (La Liga, September 26, 2007)

Deportivo La Coruna 0 - Recreativo Huelva 2 (La Liga, September 26, 2007) Goals from Jorge Carlos Martins and Javi Guerrero earned Recreativo a first away win of the season.

Osasuna 4 - Levante 1 (La Liga, September 26, 2007)

Feyenoord 3 - Utrecht 0 (KNVB Beker Cup, September 26, 2007) Three goals in eight minutes proved decisive for Feyenoord. Hofs headed the opener before Bruins burst through to double the advantage. Roy Makaay completed the rout with a neat finish from a cut-back in the box.

Argon 0 - Heerenveen 3 (KNVB Beker Cup, September 26, 2007)

Kozakken Boys 1 - Ajax 2 (KNVB Beker Cup, September 26, 2007) Heitinga put Ajax in front from the penalty spot, but on 88 minutes Looijen scored for amateur side Kozakken, with a close range shot. Ajax saved face when Rommedahl’s deflected shot in extra time gave cup holders the win.

LASK Linz 1 - Austria Vienna 1 (T-Mobile Bundesliga, September 26, 2007) Defender Bak equalised for Vienna with a simple header after the Linz keeper came and flapped on a cross.

Vitoria Guimaraes 0 - Sporting Lisbon 0* (Taca de Portugal, September 26, 2007) Sporting won on 7-6 penalties.


Amadora 1 - Benfica 1* (Taca de Portugal, September 26, 2007) Benfica won 5-4 penalties. American teenager Freddy Adu scoring the equaliser with a stoppage-time time penalty for his first goal in Portugal.
