CBC is heading to China! As the exclusive Canadian broadcaster of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, CBC will provide wall-to-wall soccer action, with a 12-game schedule of the prestigious 16-team tournament. After an incredible summer of soccer, including the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Canada, World Cup fever continues to build on CBC.
CBC’s FIFA Women’s World Cup telecast schedule includes live coverage of all Team Canada games, beginning on September 12, with the team’s first match against Norway at 7:45 a.m. ET. After capturing the bronze medal at the Pan American Games in July 2007, the Canadians, led by world-renowned striker Christine Sinclair, head into the tournament seeded ninth, their highest-ever international ranking. For insight into Team Canada, the competition and what countries to expect to see in the finals, fans can tune into Preview 2007: FIFA Women’s World Cup on CBC Television on September 9 (read more for broadcast schedule).
In addition, Canadians will be able to watch games when and where they want to, as all 32 games from the FIFA Women’s World Cup will be available online on cbcsports.ca, all free and on-demand. Comprehensive online coverage will also include special feature stories, athlete and team profiles, games, analysis, game summaries and comprehensive news and results.
Additional broadcasts of the FIFA Women’s World Cup will air on CBC Country Canada featuring extensive coverage of Canada’s matches. CBC Country Canada’s live action kicks off on September 15 at 7:45 a.m. ET from Hangzhou Dragon Stadium in China, as Team Canada’s group rivals Australia and Norway battle it out on the pitch (see below for complete broadcast schedule). Leading up to the FIFA Women’s World Cup, CBC Country Canada primes fans for the World Cup action on September 9, with live coverage of the FIFA U-17 World Cup final from Korea at Seoul’s FIFA World Cup Stadium, beginning at 6 a.m. ET. CBC Television will provide an encore presentation of the match on September 10 at 12:30 a.m. ET.
CBC’s coverage will feature the top soccer commentators in the country. Hot on the heels of CBC’s FIFA U-20 World Cup, 20-year CBC Sports veteran Scott Russell returns to host FIFA Women’s World Cup. Joining Russell in studio are former Canadian national team and internationally-acclaimed goalkeeper Craig Forrest and Helen Stoumbos, former Team Canada member and the first player ever to score a World Cup goal for Canada. Erin Paul will report directly from China throughout the tournament. Analyst Dick Howard will also be on hand to provide additional insight during the tournament.
The FIFA Women’s World Cup is recognized as the most important international competition in women’s soccer. Contested every four years, Canada’s best performance in the tournament was a fourth place finish in 2003. The current format has 16 teams competing every four years for the winner’s trophy.
