About CONCACAF Gold Cup

CONCACAF Gold Cup History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Concacaf Gold Cup is the significant competitive tournament played by National Teams from the Concacaf region. As its name reveals, it is organized by the Confederation of North, Central American, and Caribbean Association Football, one of FIFA’s six continental governing bodies. The competition started in 1991, replacing the Concacaf Championship.

Over the years, the competition has been forced to change its format, mainly due to the number of teams participating in it. Since 2000, the competition has been played by twelve or more teams, with groups of three to four, always with four teams per group. Once the group stage is over, eight teams go directly to the quarterfinals, where direct elimination is used, that is, a match is played to determine the winners. This continues until the final match, where the two best teams will fight for the title with extra time and penalties to decide who will be the winner. Unlike other national team competitions, the Gold Cup has removed the third-place match from its schedule, primarily to allow players to return to their respective clubs.

Added to the usual pool of Concacaf-based teams, the association has also included teams from other confederations to boost the tournament’s matches and appeal. Teams such as Qatar, Brazil, Colombia, and Korea Republic have played in different editions of the Gold Cup, although none of them have been able to win the title. The Gold Cup is usually played in the United States, although nations such as Canada, Mexico, Jamaica and Costa Rica have previously been selected as co-hosts. The Gold Cup is played every two years.

The first edition of the Gold Cup was won by the United States, but that does not mean they are the most dominant team in tournament history. That honor belongs to Mexico, who have won it more than any other team in the region. In fact, Mexico is the only national team to win three consecutive Gold Cup editions, something they accomplished by winning the tournaments held in 1993, 1996, and 1998.

In the USA, the 2023 Gold Cup was recently televised in English on the Fox Sports Network. TelevisaUnivision holds the Spanish-language broadcasting rights for the Gold Cup, valid up to the 2025 tournament edition. Spanish speaking US audiences have various options to watch the Gold Cup, including TUDN, Univision, and VIX for live streaming. For viewers in Mexico, the 2023 Gold Cup was showcased on Televisa and TV Azteca. Meanwhile, in Canada, the tournament's 2023 edition was broadcasted on the OneSoccer platform.
