About FIFA Club World Cup

FIFA Club World Cup History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The FIFA Club World Cup is an international men’s club tournament run by FIFA, world football’s organizing body. Founded in 2000, this competition aims to crown the champions of the world, with clubs from all over the planet taking part and battling it out for the title.

This tournament was initially called the FIFA Club World Championship and ran alongside the Intercontinental Cup — however, the FIFA Club World Championship did not take place between 2001 and 2004. The inaugural edition was held in Brazil and was won by Corinthians, with this event later merging with the Intercontinental Cup in 2005 before being rebranded to its current name a year later.

In the 2007 edition, which AC Milan won to become the first European team to lift the FIFA Club World Cup, the number of participants increased to seven to include a team from the host nation. Nonetheless, the champions of each continent’s premier club competition — the UEFA Champions League, the Copa Libertadores, the AFC Champions League, the CAF Champions League, the OFC Champions League, and the CONCACAF Champions League — have been a staple of this cup.

In December 2022, FIFA announced an expanded tournament, which was initially scheduled for 2021 but was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. World football’s governing body decided to change this competition from an annual to a quadrennial event, starting from 2025 onwards. Additionally, the number of participants was increased from seven to 32

Of the 32 slots, 12 were given to UEFA, six to CONMEBOl, while AFC, CAF, and CONCACAF were given four each. OFC was awarded one spot while the hosts were afforded an identical offer. The FIFA Club World Cup also adopted a group stage, with the 32 participants being split into eight groups of four with the top two teams in each group progressing to the next round.

The broadcast rights of the FIFA Club World Cup are typically allocated to the same broadcasters who bid and acquired the rights to televise the FIFA World Cup for that particular rights cycle. In the USA, FOX and Telemundo carry the multi-platform broadcast rights for the 2026 FIFA World Cup edition.
