About
S4C Red Button History, Coverage, Features
S4C, which stands for Channel Four Wales, is a free-to-air television channel in Wales. It is the fourth oldest television channel in the UK and the first channel in history to be aimed at a Welsh-speaking audience. It was launched on November 1, 1982 following a large number of complaints from Welsh-speaking audiences, who demanded a channel that offered them entertainment in their native language at convenient times during the day, which was not the case with other options back in the day.
S4C Red Button is a feature used by S4C to provide English subtitles to most of their programs. It has been reported by S4C that almost 80% of the content aired in this channel can be subtitled with this feature. This functionality also works with Welsh subtitles, with up to eight hours of programming available in this channel with that feature, according to information provided by S4C.
The availability and functionality of this option depends on the pay-tv carrier. Check local listings and shows in which the red button can be used with all available companies.
