About SSC Napoli
Società Sportiva Calcio Napoli, commonly known as just Napoli, is an Italian professional football club based in Naples (Napoli). The club, nicknamed “Gli Azzurri” or “I Partenopei” by its fans, was founded in 1926 as Associazione Calcio Napoli before changing its name to Società Sportiva Calcio Napoli in 1964. Napoli plays all its home games at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, which was originally known as the Stadio San Paolo before being renamed in Maradona’s honor in 2020. The Stadio Diego Armando Maradona was opened in 1959 and seats approximately 60,240 people in its current format.
Although Napoli has not enjoyed the same levels of success as other teams in Italy, namely AC Milan, Juventus, and Inter, it has nonetheless won several titles, both on the domestic and international front. The team’s most successful years were in the late 1980s, where, due to the presence of Maradona, Napoli won two Scudetti as well as a UEFA Cup. The team then suffered a period of decline during the 1990s that saw it demoted to Serie B and then Serie C due to financial issues. However, Napoli secured promotion back to Serie A in the mid 2000s and has since re-emerged as a dark horse contender for both the Scudetto and Coppa Italia over the past decade.
Napoli has rivalries with other Italian sides, namely Roma, against whom they compete in the Derby del Sole (Sun Derby), as well as Juventus due to the tensions that exist between Northern and Southern Italy. Palermo, based in Sicily, is another rival, with the two teams competing against in matches called the Derby delle Due Sicilie (Derby of the Two Sicilies).
The team has had several owners since its foundation, but is currently owned by businessman Aurelio De Laurentiis, who acquired the club in 2004 through his company Filmauro following its bankruptcy and demotion to Serie C.
