About Super League
Super League History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Greek Super League (or Super League Greece) is the top-tier football category in Greece. The competition was created in 1905, but it acquired the name until 2006, when its format was changed by the Hellenic Football Federation. The competition has been ranked among the top 20 in Europe by UEFA since the new format was adopted.
Over the years, the Greek Super League has operated as the top football category for this sport in Greece, working closely with the Greek Super League 2. Unlike most European leagues, the Greek Super League works with a regular season and a postseason format. The regular season consists of all 14 teams playing 26 matches against each other, where they will determine six places to fight for the championship. These six teams play ten more games to determine the title winners, while also handing out spots for the preliminary rounds of the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Europa League, and the UEFA Europa Conference League.
The other eight teams enter a playout round, where they will play seven more matches to determine the two lowest-ranked teams that will be relegated to Greek Super League 2.
There are three quite popular teams in Greece: Olympiakos, Panathinaikos, and AEK Athens. To make things even more interesting each season, these clubs are also the most successful in Greek top-flight history, which adds controversy to every campaign. Whenever a team earns ten titles, the club receives a Golden Star as a sign of their impressive form, and if we consider that ranking, Olympiakos are the most successful club in Greek football with four stars to their name, compared to the two owned by Panathinaikos and AEK’s single star.
In Greece, the Greek Super League is broadcast on pay-TV networks Novasports and Cosmote Sport, both providing TV and live streaming services until the end of the 2024-25 season. Internationally, interest in the Super League exists mostly among the Greek diaspora, where it can be watched on ANT1 Satellite in the US and Canada and ANT1 Pacific in Australia.
